Referrals to Speech and Language Therapy

We have an open referral system – which means anyone can refer a child to our service. This includes parents and carers, as well as professionals (with parent/carer consent).

Before You Make a Referral

Whether you’re a parent, carer, or professional, please read our:

• Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Referral Guidelines 0-19 Years

Education practitioners should use the Screening Tool before referring a child to the service. It helps identify whether the child would benefit from additional support or a referral.

For Parents and Carers

If you’re worried about your child’s speech, language or communication, you can refer them directly to us.

For Professionals

Thinking about making a referral?

If you’re a professional (e.g. teacher, health visitor, SENCo), you can refer a child with parent/carer consent.

Before referring:

• All professionals should read the Referral Guidelines

• Education staff must complete the Screening Tool (see below) as part of the process

Feeding Difficulties

We support children with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

If the difficulties are more about emotions, behaviour, using utensils, or appetite, other professionals or services may be more suitable.

Speech, Language & Communication – Screening Tool

Our screening tool uses pictures and tasks to help identify if a child might need extra support with their speech, language or communication.

It helps you decide whether:

• The child may benefit from some additional support

• A referral to our Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Service is appropriate
